The Great Old Ones respect the Outer Gods and may be seen as heralds or high priests of their greater kind. Great Old Ones are far less mobile than the Outer Gods. Indeed, many Great Old Ones are imprisoned, unable to move until some catastrophe occurs that unbinds them. At this point of release, some prophecies predict the ending of worlds and the ascension of the Great Old Ones to the realms of the Outer Gods. They are thought to be of a vast, alien intelligence which mortals investigate at their own peril. Those who follow them and draw magical power from their worship are almost always insane.

It is fortunate indeed that Cthulhu is currently imprisoned on a distant planet within the sunken city of R'lyeh. There, the Great Old One slumbers away the eons in a state neither quite dead nor living, held in stasis by ancient magic and the potency of the Elder Sign, yet.
Hastur is the most mysterious of the Great Old Ones. In fact, the entity known as Hastur might actually be an Outer God. The physical manifestation of this entity is known as the King in Yellow, and though most consider this creature—a vaguely human-shaped figure draped in a yellow cloak—to be synonymous with Hastur himself, many scholars believe that the King in Yellow is nothing more than an avatar used by the true Hastur to move among the denizens of the physical world. Hastur himself. Great Old Ones. Hey, folks! Has anyone of you ever had an encounter with a great old one? If yes, share your stories! How was it implented? Mhar is a volcano-shaped Great Old One that has been trapped under Mhar Massif for aeons and seeks to destroy Golarion As you may know, the Great Old Ones are taken directly from the writing of H.P. Lovecraft, and are used more for flavor in the Golarion setting than as actual monsters or deities that are actively worshiped. In that world they dwell in the Dark Tapestry, and have very little to do with Golarion (which is a good thing) Lord British Postulate: Several of the Great Old Ones have stats and can be killed, albeit with extreme difficulty. The Great Old One assumes a larger size, unfettered and unrestrained by normal space and the prosaic reality that mortals exude. For now, dead Cthulhu lies asleep in the corpse city of R'lyeh on a distant world far from Golarion, held in stasis by powerful magic and the power of the Elder Sign. The Great Old Ones themselves often serve and worship even greater powers, such as Azathoth, Nyarlathotep, Shub-Niggurath, and Yog-Sothoth. Those creatures are the Outer Gods, and whereas the Great Old Ones can be thought of as akin to demigods, the Outer Gods are themselves true deities. Other Great Old Ones Bokrug, Cthulhu, and Hastur are but three of the Great Old Ones—countless others. In the Pathfinder multiverse, it's a Great Old One known as Tawil at'Umr, which is not a well-known entity. Which serves Yog-Sothoth, operating as the physical projection of its will and working toward its agenda across the dimensions. Tawil at'Umr is theorized on Golarion to being the side of effect of Yog-Sothoth's contact with the material plane. Its knowledge about reality is vast.

Little is known of the being called Azathoth, also known as the Blind Formless Chaos That Lies Behind the Stars. It feels like a mistake including beings like Cthulhu in a heroic fantasy game, even for horror campaigns. Cthulhu is statted, and he's no more powerful than any other demigod in the rule books. He can be fought and defeated, and this seems to be grossly missing the point of Cthulhu. It seems like the Great Old Ones, and the Outer Gods, were added haphazardly to the Golarion setting too Pathfinder Battles Pawns / Tokens - #155 Great Old One, Tawil at'Umr - Bestiar 6.
